![]() Oats is “a strange experiment," Blomkamp says, "born out of wanting to be able to make whatever we felt like making and giving it directly to the audience.” The 40-person, Vancouver-based operation is an end run around the traditional Hollywood system, with its test screenings and bottom-line mentality, but that isn’t to say Blomkamp is done with making Hollywood movies. The studio’s first release, Blomkamp’s 20-minute alien-invasion film Rakka, stars Sigourney Weaver and can now be viewed for free on YouTube and Steam (or just above this very paragraph). This time it’s via his new independent film incubator, Oats Studios, which is specifically dedicated to oddball and unconventional shorts. Giving that this is not a complete movie it's a little hard to give it a grade, but for what I've seen so far of Firebase I give it a.Two years after the release of his last Hollywood movie-the nutso Chappie, featuring a sentient, gangsta robot and a mullet-sporting Hugh Jackman-director Neill Blomkamp is back with something even weirder. The creatures are the focal point of all of these short films and they're all well done. I love movies with strange monsters like, Predator, Alien, even The Thing, and Neil Blomkamp must as well because all of his movies seem to have one. ![]() The acting is good in it, the special effects and CGI are great, but most of all the story of this one was the most compelling for me. This is my favorite one of the three shorts I've seen so far, it has a Predator or Apocalypse Now type of vibe to it that most fans of sci-fi or horror should find enjoyable. Hopefully if more people seem to like it, the studio will make the remaining volumes to finish out the story that is started in volume 1. This short film is only about 25 minutes long, and just to make it clear this is not a complete movie, it has no ending. I really don't want to give away too much of what happens in Firebase, it's best if you just see for yourself. It also turns the deceased soldiers into these strange creatures that have an insect type of look to them. There is some kind of supernatural threat in the jungle of Vietnam that is wiping out entire military bases and it can't be stopped. Then as the action unfolds you will notice strange things happening that defy the laws of physics and nature. ![]() We first see a group of soldiers tracking down some unknown enemy. Where Rakka took place in the future, Firebase takes us back to the Vietnam war. Or possibly make it into a full length feature film. If people seem to like it and it gets positive attention, Neil will release volume 2, 3, etc. This is volume 1 of Firebase, and can be viewed for free on Youtube. All those are sci-fi movies and the shorts he's making here are no different. He's made such films as District 9, Chappie, and Elysium. ![]() It was created by Neil Blomkamp, a well known writer and director. Anyway, the strangely named, Oats Studios, is a production company that makes experimental short films. On my last review, Rakka, the photo with the name of the movie on it didn't work for some reason, so in case that happens again, hopefully this will help. First off I apologize for having the same photo twice at the beginning. Hello everyone and welcome to my review of Firebase, Oats Studios second short film released on their Youtube channel.
